The Pilgrim's Progress (The Christian Classics)

Publisher: CBN University Press Virginia Beach, VA, 1978
Foreword by Dr. M. G. Robertson. Decorated Covers. In the preparation of this, the Puritan Edition of Pilgrim’s Progress, special attention has been paid to revision of the text, and great pains taken to restore this as nearly as possible to the text which had received Bunyan’s own latest corrections and additions. For example, Worldly Wiseman first makes his appearance in the second edition, published in 1678, the year already made famous by the publication of the first edition. In the third edition, issued in 1679, Bunyan added the characteristic portrait of Mr. By-ends. During Bunyan’s life-time, eleven editions of the great book were published, the last appearing in 1688, the year of his death. "The edition now presented to readers of every class contains the text of the Pilgrim’s Progress as it stood when Bunyan’s death removed all possibility of further revision…." 304 pages. No Jacket. Hard Cover. Book condition: Very Good

The Sanctity of Law: In What Does It Consist?

Publisher: Harper & Brothers Publishers New York, 1928
The Sanctity of Law: In What Does It Consist? The Story of Man’s Attainment of Law and Order from Roman Times to the Present. By John W. Burgess, Ph.D., J.U.D., LL.D. New York: Harper & Brothers, Publishers, 1928. Hardcover. "….I have persuaded myself to…treat the question of the Sanctity of Law with some fullness, from the points of view of history and philosophy as well as political ethics….There is little question in the mid of the close observer of events that man, in the most civilized portions of the earth, is today passing from the theological to the scientific era in regard to the subject dealt with in this little volume. Throughout these same portions of the earth the scientific method of the acquisition of truth has already conquered the domains of mathematics and physics, and any attempt to control individual thought upon those subjects through legislation, business boycott, or social ostracism only provokes a smile of derision on the part of those who have any understanding of the scientific movement of the last half-century. We are now confronted with the same movement in politics and law…." viii + 345 pages with index. Book is in GOOD condition. No dust jacket. No Jacket. Hard Cover. Book condition: Good

Our Flag and Our Schools. By Samuel Engle Burr (ed). New Castle, DE: The Americanism Committees of The Department of Delaware, The American Legion, and Le Grande Voiture de Delaware, La Societe des 40 et 8, 1937. Second edition, second printing. Oversized softcover. "The Flag of our Country is her standard, her symbol. This symbol stands for our history, our government, our institutions, our homes. It also represents our courage, our hopes, and our vision. To each of us, it means what our Country means. From its beautiful folds shine forth justice and righteousness; equality and opportunity; life, liberty and the right to pursue happiness. It is an emblem of peace with justice, of love with power, of devotion with daring, of friendship and freedom. By our work for the ideals for which it stands, we as American put meaning into its colors. Not with empty words do we pledge it our allegiance, but with hearts full of gratitude for our inheritance of liberty, and with determination to pass on to our children its glory, undimmed by selfish act or narrow thinking….The public schools of Delaware are deeply grateful for the assistance of the American Legion and the 40 & 8 in teaching the proper use of and respect for our Flag." From Boston to Bareilly and Back

Publisher: Phillips & Hunt New York, 1886
From Boston to Bareilly and Back. By William Butler. New York; Phillips & Hunt, 1886. Hardcover. This copy was published in 1886; it is not a modern reprint. In 1856, Butler went to the valley of the Ganges River in India as a missionary to found a church. In 1884 he returned to India to see the results of his efforts. "….After the expiration of twenty-seven years, thouse who sent him forth in 1856, on the duty of founding a mission for their Church, concluded, in their generosity, to send him again, that he might witness its development, and rejoice over ‘what God hath wrought’ during the interval in the field which he had selected, and along the lines of labor which he then laid out for his associates and successors. Few founders of missions have been thus favored as to time and circumstance and the opportunity for reviewing their work…." 517 pages with index. A Man of the World

Publisher: Little, Brown and Company Boston, MA, 1905
A Man of the World. By Annie Payson Call. Boston, MA: Little, Brown, and Company, 1905. First edition. Hardcover. Annie Payson Call (1853-1940) was a popular writer from Waltham, Massachusetts. Her themes revolved around mental health. "There are two worlds in the minds of men: the one is artificial, selfish, and personal, the other is real and universal; the one is limited, material, essentially of the earth, the other supposes a kind of larger cosmopolitanism, and has no geographical limits at all; it is as wide as humanity itself, and only bounded by the capacity for experience, insight, and sympathy in the mind and heart of man. A true man of the world, therefore, is not primarily of it, --a true man of the world must know and understand the world; and in order to do so, he should be able at any time to get it into perspective…." 61 pages. Publisher: D. M. Campana Chicago, IL, 1912
Roses and How To Paint Them. By D. M. Campana. Chicago, D. M. Campana, 1912. First edition. Oversized softcover. "….The title of this book, ‘Roses and How To Paint Them, ’ comprises the painting of roses in general, be it in water color, on china, oil color, fresco pastels and textiles. The field is very broad and much matter could be gathered to make a very large book, but my aim was to explain, in an easy form, the technics that would give good results in the different branches of painting. Allowing that my word can not be the last, the rules, as given here, will surely lead the student to the proper path, as many students following these rules under my supervision have greatly profited and become proficient in the painting of roses and other flowers…." A Gentle Knight: My Husband, Walter White

Publisher: Rinehart & Company, Inc. New York, 1956
"This is the biography of a marriage, unusually happy and tender, though subjected to cruel pressures and strains that might have shattered a less firm union. It is the warm and courageous story of Poppy Cannon’s marriage to Walter White, blue-eyed and fair-haired, a man who chose to identify himself as a Negro and thus made a special mockery of the so-called race problem. "With heart-warming frankness, understanding, and humor, Poppy Cannon tells of the problems faced by a white woman married to the executive head of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People: the effect on her children in a highly conservative community, the storm in the press; new hostilities and friendships. "She sees and reports upon two worlds--white and colored--in a manner both personal and analytical. The Whites continued to fight together for the ideals he had relentlessly pursued all his life. "However, this is not merely a story of great achievements, great names, momentous decisions. It is above all, a vivid portrait of a man who had all the qualities of ‘chivalre, trouthe, and honour, freedom and curtesey’ that Chaucer gave to his ‘verray Parfit, Gentil Knight.’ Walter White’s death in 1955 was a stunning loss to all humanity." 309 pages with index. . Simplified Water Color Painting

Publisher: York Art Center Publishing Company York, PA, 1950
"The water color medium is the most direct and simplest of the painting mediums. There are some who think the water color medium as difficult and unsatisfactory but that is principally because they have not approached it right or with the proper materials. Not even an expert could do much on a buckled paper or with hard cakes of color. With the correct materials and a bold approach there are no reasons for difficulties. Good drawing and a vivid imagination of course are an asset in any medium…." 32 pages This is a SCARCE TITLE that is not commonly found!. No Jacket. Soft Cover. Book condition: Good
